the truth about Eden

Eden is crawling with snakes.
i love the fruits too much to care.
i bet no one told you this,
but the paths are strewn with the
most vicious-looking thorns.
they cut into my feet
the grass is wet with dewdrops
and my blood;
i love the fruits too much to care.
in fact, Eden really is Hell.
pretty sure i saw Satan sauntering
around in the groves one day.
cape billowing, eyes like
lasers and fire and all of your worst
nightmares put together.
my knees buckled
skin pebbled
the aroma of misery and gloom and destruction
wafted across.
but i stayed, i stayed.
because, you know,
i love the fruits too much to care.
one by one
i pluck all of them from the trees
bite into the
honeyed goodness till
juice dribbles down my chin.
i wipe it off
only to see my hands covered in red liquid.
the fruit
is yellow in colour.
now doubled over on the ground
i'm choking on
sweet poison
but I lick the blood
off my lips and
smile.
i love the fruits too much to care.
